My neice’s birthday is the inspiration of the latest bag. a 9-year old has needs, so i added an extension feature to the bag and embellishments suitable for this stylish young lady. A 5" extension to the top has casing and drawstring to hold contents inside or give the bag extra top room for bulk. Bottom of bag matches pocket lining to bring this design element more continuity and attention, while adding additional support and reinforcement to the bag’s foundation. Trim gave the side seams a nice finish and playful edge that tied the overall color palette, textures and shape together. Really fun bag to make! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JENNE!
Lots of variation for this versatile tote. I used a combination of upholstery fabrics and 100% cotton shirting. Wherever I used shirting, I added fusible interfacing. Drawstring is 1/4" round nylon with knotted ends and then frayed. Button holes in the casing allow drawstring entry and exit points. Inside bag at bottom, matching interior fabric, a sleeve containing an insert made from cardboard and reinforced with fusible, stiff Pellon on each side giving support. When making the extension topper…cut 2 pieces of fabric on the bias at 6.5" wide by 18.5" long. Silk flower embellishment has plastic elements removed except for the very center, then was sewn on for stability using zig zag stitch and sewn close to center of flower over layers. One time around keeps it secure and allows petals to stay fluffy and intact.
