These are the first pair of pants I’ve ever sewn. I made them straight from the pattern, cutting my size with no other alterations since I wasn’t sure what alterations I’d need for this first attempt. I’m surprised at how well they fit! I’ll be making a few alterations with my next pair since the waistband gaps a bit, there seems to be a bit too much fabric in the crotch, and they’re not as snug at the back of the thigh as I’d like. But, overall, I couldn’t be happier with my first pair of hand-sewn pants.

1. First time pants and you sew jeans? – very brave! 2. First pair of pants and they look that good? – I am totally impressed!! Gives me some courage to dare to try sewing trousers, soon.

I bought Helen Joseph-Armstrong’s book Patternmaking for Fashion Design. Search online really hard, try Abe books and get it at a good price! Using your own measurements you draft your own trouser pattern. It is very easy to do. I made a pair of slacks and feel that they sit very nicely. It gives instructions for trousers, slacks and jeans fittings. Keep up the good work! Your jeans certainly look great from here!

My mother-in-law gave me that book for my birthday last year, but I’ve used it mostly for blouses. I’ll have to thoroughly read the pants chapters!
