I have always been inspired by my favorite first lady so I decided to recreate a coat I imagine she would love to wear. I drafted the pattern myself and layered black chantelli lace over red wool to get a textured pattern. I used large self covered buttons and made bound buttonholes. Hand beading helps to accentuate the color and welt pockets. The jacket is interfaced with horse hair canvas to help it hold it’s shape. I lined the coat with polka dot silk, added a gold silk binding and embroidered the quote “When in doubt wear red.” ~Bill Blass into the front facing.
