Description

There’s a story behind this dress. I needed to get some practice making a princess line dress, so I asked a friend if I could make one for her. She told me that her mother had been telling her all her life that if she would only get her life together, she would buy her a Chanel outfit. So we decided my dress would do instead. We developed the design together – the idea we were aiming for is what looks like a coat over a dress from the side, so the front piece is done in cotton and the rest in black linen. We found a really cool print for the cotton inset. Then, while I was putting the finishing touches on the dress, I stumbled onto the line-up for Channel’s spring ‘09 collections, and, lo-and-behold, a whole slew of their dresses use a very similar motif as the one we developed for this dress!

My friend finished up the outfit with a pair of red boots and a red corsage to set them off (red corsage not shown).

The dress is lined with black satin as well. Did I mention this is the first dress I’ve made? The whole project took about 30 hours, but about half this was spent on developing the pattern, and the rest on assembly, finishing and fitting.

For completeness, I’ve included the original design from my Photoshop files.

Material Notes

Printed cotton, linen, satin lining, black thread, interfacing, zipper, snap

Wow, this is just imaginative and beautiful. And clever (looking like coat from a side). I hope I’ll find the time and the will to try and make similar dress… :)

Wonderful story! The dress is really nice, especially for your first one! The idea of making the garment look like it has an overcoat is creative and then to find that Channel is making similar dresses is so kewl! Great job!
