Description

My daughter, Sarah, asked me if I would make her this maxi dress from Burda’s 04/2014 patterns. #121, the Island Placket Maxi Dress. We purchased some beautiful floral fabric for the dress, a flowing lightweight fabric like crepe satin, and lightweight lining fabric, as the dress is completely lined. Great pattern!

Material Notes

Burda 04/2014 – #121 Island Placket Dress pattern. Crepe Satin fabric for dress. Lining fabric. 5 small round buttons.

Looks great! I’ve been wanting to sew this up but concerned about the back, does the bra show?

Hello Michelle! Sarah is wearing a strapless bra. By adding 5/8" at the fold of the back section (pattern piece #5) I was able to overlap the sides of the back (at the waist) to the side-front bodice. This gave the dress about a 1" -2" covering above the waist so that she could wear a bra with the dress. Without the extra addition to the back pattern piece, the point of the side-front bodice meets the point of the side-back panel on both sides – at the waist. I like the extra coverage and it fits her better too!

So, just to give you a visual – when you place pattern piece #5 on the fold of the fashion fabric and the lining, make sure it is 5/8" from the fold. You are actually adding 1 and 2/8" to the width of the back panel.

      Hope this helps!

      Susan

      Hello Michelle,
I had this exactly same dress from mango a couple years ago (like, same length, same number of buttons, EXACTLY) and I wore it with this kind of bra : http://s3.amazonaws.com/ws-shop/public/system/variants/28527/extralarge/P_427476899F.jpg?1377620303
      It was absolutely perfect !
I’m re-doing this dress right now, I’ll some photos with it so you can see .
