Burda Style For people who sew
Description
Many of you may have seen this already – I posted it on Craftster about two years ago based off of Rostitchery’s infamous infinity dress. The pattern is here:

I made this for my high school graduation. We had to wear white, floor-length, non-strapless, non-bedazzled dresses (impossible, right? Everything has a rhinestone on it now.) I found this pattern and decided it would be perfect, and tied it in the grecian style. It was very easy – only a couple of seams.
For my particular version of this dress, the skirt was cut on the bias for a better drape; because it was floor-length, however, it was done in two pieces, not a circle skirt, so it has side seams. Also, my straps were doubled over for more coverage and finishing since this was for a formal event. The skirt was not hemmed.
- Btw I have seen many people use these for bridesmaids dresses – they can be tied in a multiplicity of ways and can be all the same color, and still be flattering for everyone. I highly recommend this!

I absolutely adoreee this dress. I am going to a boat party soon and I can’t afford a really nice dress. How did you go about tying this? And also what fabric did you use (does it have to be stretchy?) Thank you!

The tying instructions are posted below, and yes definitely use a stretchy fabric. Otherwise, you will need a zipper and hems and finished edges and it defeats the purpose of its simplicity :) When not a full-length gown, this dress is all one seam! Which is pretty amazing. I suggest something in a 2-way stretch rather than 4-way, because getting the waist to be the right size (and not too big) with a 4-way is a lot more difficult.

Thanks! I’m still debating whether I could pull it off or go for something more fitted and flattering, mainly I just like the cost of this! I think I will make it regardless of whether or not I wear it! Its beautiful!

This is an absolutely gorgeous dress, and it looks lovely on! I’ve made an infinity dress before (using Rostitchery’s wonderful tutorial), but I never thought of making it full length. The volume of it suits the fabric and style quite well without overwhelming you like a full circle skirt would. Did you make the skit portion a half-circle rather than a full to cut down on bulk?

Thank you! The skirt was cut on the bias in a sort of moderate a-line shape, more suiting to an eveningwear silhouette. I cut two and seamed them up the sides.

There were a couple questions on how to tie the dress – I posted a long thread on Craftster about this, but it may be hard to find so I’ll go ahead and post here. It’s a bit confusing to follow so I’ll try to be as clear as I can!
1. Position the dress with the two straps in front of you. 2. Taking the strap on the right, bring it across (parallel to the ground) so that it is making a lowercase " t " with your right arm. Try to keep the straps flattened the whole time, not twisting (unless of course that is the look you are going for!) 3. Wrap this strap around your arm now all the way, so it is sticking out from under your armpit now. 4. The strap should be pointing forward, and so far you should have it wrapped once around your arm. Now, you will bring it up and over your shoulder like a halter strap. 5. Let it chill here. 6. Repeat with the left strap. 7. With both straps hanging over your shoulders (this can be a little tricky – the straps may slide down your arms a bit when doing this but no worries, it is easy to adjust after-the-fact) take them behind your back and make an " x ". Be sure they are laying flat, you may want to spread them out while doing this. 8. The right strap is now on the left in the back, and the left strap is now on the right in the back. They are sticking out at your sides. Bring them to the front, and criss-cross them in an " x " once more. 9. Now, bring them once more to the back, and tie a loose bow or a knot (but by loose bow I still mean tight – you don’t want your top to slide off slowly!) This looks rather nice with very long straps so a sort of train is trailing down the back of the dress.

I just love this. I feel a bit inspired. I think I may use the Linda skirt pattern for the skirt part. I have seen just the fabric for this at my fave place – Tessuti in Melbourne. Well done!
