This is my first dress and second project sewing from a pattern. I had pretty good success making a tara top, so I decided to make a dress next. I got a little too ambitious and used jersey.
I followed the instructions. The jersey did not. To get the top front and upper back to lay right, I had to pin and tuck and pin some more, but it finally lays right (for the most part) and is really comfortable. Plus, it’s more covering than the original design, and I think I could easily wear a strapless bra with it, but the crossed straps give it a good bit of support (or maybe I just don’t have much to hold up! :-p ) To do the straps, I just made straight straps and sewed them to the front. Then I crossed them, and sewed them to the back. Then I pinned the gigantic amount of puckering (basically the whole upper back folded in half), sewed a seam down the middle, and cut off the excess. This drew the straps almost completely together in the back. This alteration also helped make the previously lumpy under arm seams lie flat.
I probably won’t sew with jersey again til I get a little more experienced, but I really like this dress. I took a chance on some goofy sale fabric and ended up really liking the result.
I used the Grosgrain Frock by Friday tutorial for help. http://grosgrainfabulous.blogspot.com/2010/06/frock-by-friday-tara-dress.html
