I needed a vest to go with my kilt for Scottish Highland Dance performances. I used the Unique highland vest pattern, with cotton velvet, horse hair interlining, and “official” braid and buttons. I hand sewed the braid, and never ended up taking out the basting stiches, as they were not visible when I finished (especially to an audience at a distance). The buttons are set into small buttonholes and fixed in place with a string run through the back. The front closure is hook and eye, alternating to make it less prone to coming open when I’m jumping around.
The horsehair interlining was difficult to use (my first time with it), especially since I also had boning in the front. I ended up with a lot of thickness to deal with.
