Grand Rapids, Mi...
This is one of my garments for my collection called, “For the Pleasures of Searing Water.” The collection was for our student show this year and the theme was “The Movies.” I was inspired by the movie (And book), “Memoirs of a Geisha.” I wanted to take Geisha history and motifs and apply them with modern contemporary western fashion trends.
This coat and dress was inspired by the fiery character, Hatsumomo, who serves as one of the “Villains” in the movie.
The dress is 100% wool jersey and is secretly belted to cinch in the sides of the waist while allowing the drape in the front. The dress was draped and then finished with flat patterning.
The kimono coat was flat patterned and was created by overlapping two different lace fabrics on top of a champagne lining. Swarovski crystals were sewn to add sparkle and help keep the three layers together. Faux leather cuffs are lined with a red silk dupioni.
