This is a harem girl/Scheherazade costume I made for Halloween using OOP McCalls 9559 (the pants) and vintage Forties Advance pattern 4147 (the bodice). Halloween was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy but fortunately my cousin Cathy was willing to model it for me! The costume was inspired by old Forties Arabian Nights movies starring Maria Montez, hence the big shoulder pads and vintage-style metallic leather heels.

The bodice and pants yoke is made from “nude” power net overlaid with gold mesh. The pants and scarves are all poly chiffon. The turban is a large piece of stretch velvet. The gold beads are old plastic Christmas tree decorations. The bodice is constructed over a beige padded bra. The trim is mainly beaded gimp one would use for drapery. The flowers are from a dollar store on 8th Ave. in the NYC Garment District and I found the tassel tie back at my local flea market. The pearls are from Cartier — just kidding!
