Burda Style For people who sew

This is one of my favorite projects to date! I used 100% silk chiffon and habotai silk lining. The pattern is self drafted – and probably the most simple design to draft. I added a V-neck collar and slits at the front of the dress to tie a belt around the waist. All of the fabric had to be pre-washed and air dried before assembling to prepare the dress for dyeing. I then assembled the dress using silk thread to make sure the thread would dye evenly with the fabric.
The dress itself took a really long time to make. If you’re familiar with silk chiffon you’ll know it gets pretty wrinkled when you wash it. This dress takes about five yards so it took forever to iron the fabric before cutting the pattern pieces. Once the dress was completely sewn I had to dip dye it.
This process took about an hour and I had to be super careful while doing it to make sure I got a nice Ombre effect.
Once the dress was dyed I had to re-wash, iron and steam. The last step for this dress was hand sewing every single pailette.
In the end this dress took around 15-20 hours to make. But it looks amazing – I’m really glad I chose to use silk chiffon because it creates a really pretty movement when you walk in the dress.

I made this dress for a runway show last month and it was the favorite amongst all my models! I’m really proud of the way it came out.
