Description

I made this dress for my sister’s graduation and it’s the first thing I’ve ever sewn for someone else. Of course that meant a million fittings and a couple of pin injuries for her and some performance angst for me…but in the end it turned out alright, and she likes it :-)

I used miasu’s contour bust pattern, added ruched straps and a simple a-line skirt.

PS: Does anyone know how avoid the “wonky zipper seam” look when usiing silk ??

Material Notes

Silk satin, interfacing, zipper

So cute:D I hand pick my zippers, it doesn’t take all that long and is sturdy and simple. also the zippers I’ve picked look better than any of the machine sewn ones I’ve made. There are some great tutorials on the interwebs.

The straps are sucha great idea! For the zipper, what I did with my first silk dress is that I first sewed the pleats and then I added the zipper. It was 2 seams but in the end you don’t really see it… And it’s still better than a “wonky zipper seam” ! But I think the easiest is an invisible zipper with the special foot. That’s a wonderful invention !

this dress is so amazing and individual…I love the way the straps are an integral part of the design. How did you achieve that did you drape this and how are they attached at the front?

Thanks :-) The straps are have gathered seams on both ends to get the ruched look. I also added a seam in the front, middle of the bodice, and attached the straps there. The pleats over the bust I draped on the bodice and then I hand-sewed them on.
