Description

I wanted a short, not-too-heavy jacket for every day and I loved this wool and had been saving it forever. The pattern was well-written and came together beautifully. The only flaw for me is that a little of the lining shows at the collar, but I don’t know how to fix that and don’t really mind since I like the lining print. I wanted the appearance of buttons but I used hook-and-eyes as the closures so as not to have to make buttonholes through the lining, and I eliminated the patch pockets.

Material Notes

Grey cashmere, cotton morning-glory print lining, and vintage glass buttons.

This jacket reminds me of my grandmother so I’ll give a credit to her. Also, my mom found the buttons, and the photos are by Matthew.

Great jacket. I love the collar and neckline. I would have a tip about the lining at collar and front (for next time that is, if I were you, I’d keep this one the way it is): even if your pattern doesn’t include them, make facings at the neckline and along the opening in the outer fabric. They should be at least 4 cm wide (when finished) and are usually interfaced (on this jacket, I would have used a woven fusible interfacing especially for wools). When you add facings, trace them off the pattern pieces for the outside (lining pieces are usually slightly bigger) and take strips the width of the facing off the lining pieces (if your pattern includes seam allowance, pay a lot of attention to how to place those now) With facings, the lining wouldn’t show and because they’re heavier than lining, they also help keeping a heavy collar in place.

I love your jacket. It is classic and modern at the same time. I think it was a good call to leave off the pockets. Well done.
