I’ve been having serious sewing woes lately. I haven’t been sewing as frequently as previously, and, on the few occasions when I have sewn, I’ve been disappointed with the results and have discontinued the project.
I decided that the only way out of this slump was to sew for a specific occasion, and to not rush the project.
The result? My graduation infatuation dress. I worked very hard on this dress, slowly and painstakingly cared for each detail, and spent an enormous amount of time picking out seams when I made mistakes. I wore it for my graduation hooding ceremony and a fancy dinner that followed. I also made a crinoline to make the skirt poof, which really didn’t go too well under my graduation robe (I looked like Barney the dinosaur). Don’t worry, I took the crinoline out for the hooding ceremony and just wore it for the dinner.
I used the bodice for Vogue 1174, which has a ridiculous amount of ease. I cut it a size smaller than my measurements dictated and still had to cut out another 2 inches. The skirt is a full circle.

Beautious!
Now, would you give a little “crinoline talk”? It’s clearly effective and appropriate for the dress. How many layers is it? Was it difficult to create? Did it make you “feel pretty” while wearing it underneath the dress? Please, do tell.

The crinoline is basically 4 tiers (i.e. long strips of fabric). I believe that elegantmusings has a pattern that is similar to what I did. However, elegantmusing’s pattern calls for 2 layers, while I added a middle layer, and in the middle layer I added an extra layer on the bottom tier only. So mine is 3 layers with a 4th layer on the bottom tier only.
The crinoline definitely made me feel like a princess in the dress. The dress would not have been the same without it. The only difficult part about creating the crinoline was trying to make the gathers properly fit the tier that it was to be sewed to (if that makes sense). I was surprised at how much time it took to gather and fit to size.

I saw them! At least they go to good use as your kids can play with them. Perhaps I can send my recent failures to Aus for their dress up box.
Congrats on your 5 successes!
Thanks! :)
