This frock is the final product of an entire semester studying how to draft patterns by hand, WOW that is tough! I am horrible with math, yet after much practice my fractions are getting a tiny bit better, and my slopers actually fit.
The inspiration for this was the emotion of “amourousness” which means you feel very passionate and in love, maybe even lustful in some cases. To embody this in a dress I chose to use a mass of flounces to give it that “butterflies in your stomach” feeling when wearing and seeing.
To construct I chose a basic strapless form with princess seams made from plain cotton broadcloth. Next was the fun part!
Since both the outer layer and flounces were chiffon I could not mark on ANYTHING, or rip seams, because my professor would find it of course. Carefully, I added simple darts and started to work on the flounces themselves.
To get a cascading effect from the right to left side, I measured diagonally across the form, divided by Pi and created two different sized flounces. These were then sewn in pairs (9 in all), serged with a rolled hem, and pinned so that the convex of each was on the right side of the dress.
An entire weekend was devoted merely to the flounces themselves; cutting, tapering, learning how to adjust my serger, pinning, basting, stitching, etc.
Unfortunately the dress is still with my prof, but atleast I was able to get a couple of decent photos!
I have noticed that there is no how-to about flounces on here, so I MUST get on that before classes start!
