I’m not really sure about this coat, hence the lack of effort with the photos – it just didn’t end up how I envisioned it in my mind :( so I am planning to try and save it.
The gabardine is actually a bit more plum in real life, this colour is really hard to photograph! My inspiration was from a David Jones Catalogue I got in the mail for winter 2010 and I do love the buttons and buckles and the alterations I made to the gun flaps (I cut them more pointy).
Unfortunately it makes me feel huge, especially in the shoulders and despite cutting it down to a 38 (I usually cut a 42) it still feels way too big for me, even layered over my thickest winter items. I really should have considered the model image more before I chose this pattern as my final choice.
So right now, looking at these photos again, I am leaning towards saving it by nipping in the waist more and refitting the shoulders and bust but this will require a huge amount of unpicking of my very neat top stitching, so perhaps next winter?
I will repost if I do eventually “save” it ;)

I thought the coat was (and is beautiful). We are usually our own worst critics. Wear it with pride!

Thank you xx we are, aren’t we?! I’ll be all right, the unpicker and I have had words with the coat and a few pins later it’s looking better already :)

Thanks Carolyn, I think it’s more me not being used to the style but I’ve already got the sleeves off and pinned it all up and I am already much happier with it :) I’ll be able to save this one! xx

I feel so sad for you! It’s the one downer about sewing – all that work and then the lack of love for it. We all have those items lurking in our wardrobes. But for what it’s worth, your coat looks beautiful and you really did a sublime job, I hope you try to save it when you are ready!

I know, I try so hard not to get too many lurkers, I am proud of my sewing though so it’s worth the effort to save :)

I think it looks great the way it is. The fit looks good to me, especially when it is all done up- which is when these coats look the best.

Aww thanks xx I’m just used to a little less ease so I’ll nip it in a bit and then I’m sure I’ll fall in love with it, I am proud of my sewing so it’s worth the effort to save :)

I think you have done an amazing job and you look great in it. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You may not like shoulder pads, but that is what will fix up the shoulders instead of unpicking and refitting. Otherwise, your coat looks very good on you.

Shoulder pads are an excellent idea, it might bring the whole front up and sit better, I have some so I’ll slip them under there tonight and see what I think. I have taken the sleeves off and re-pinned the shoulders and I am already happier with the shape :)

I Think it looks great, call me crazy but I like my winter coats a little larger so it will accommodate a blazer or suit.

Thanks Patti, I think I’m just used to more fitted items, I think I’ll take it in a bit and then I’ll get used to it.

Oh, that stinks when you put in all that work and aren’t happy with it at the end. :( It is beautifully sewn and I hope you love it when you finish your alterations!
