Burda Style For people who sew
Description
This is my second underbust corset project made using the Laughing Moon Underbust Corset pattern, this time I made a ribbon corset.
The panels are PVC backed onto coutil and rather than satin ribbons I used printed cotton ribbon. I have picked out the angles of the ribbons using satin and grosgrain ribbon attached with basic hand embroidery. The lining is cotton.
I learnt a lot making this, especially that PVC is a tough fabric to work with – totally unforgivable, un-ironable and cannot be pinned easily. This may be the last time I use it!
I also found out that my 1923 Singer is the best for boning channels and doesn’t get stuck to the PVC like my modern machine. It is my new best friend.

This is stunning, I love it and want one for myself! Ribbon corsets have always looked confusing to me, are they as confusing as they look? Love the cupcake lining too! great job :)

The corset is beautifully done. Very creative use of the ribbon.
Not sure if you’ve tried it, but putting a piece of tape (Masking tape works well, just make sure you leave the middle open for the needle) under the foot will help when sewing pvc. It keeps it from sticking to the machine (most machines have a TEFLON foot attachment you can buy as well for fabric that is slick or sticks). In the past I’ve also tried the tissue paper method and the baby powder method to keep pvc/vinyl from sticking while sewing it. I wouldn’t suggest pinning pvc since the holes are slow to close up but a standard stapler is handy and usually leaves tiny holes that will close up. When storing unused pieces of pvc/vinyl make sure you roll it up instead of folding it and it will keep creases and folds at bay. Hope you decide to give pvc another chance because your work so far is truly lovely.1 Reply
