The day I bought this fabric I’d only gone to Spotlight to get some satin to line my Boulanger dress, but the discounted fabrics table is right next to the cutting counters, and I spied an elegant and feminine lemon floral voile. It was only about $3 a metre and so sweet and pretty that I decided I had to buy it, and put it away in my stash. I’d also had the embroidered applique butterfly in my stash for about five years – I had no idea what I would do with it, but it was so pretty and only $6, so of course I had to buy it.
The fabric is so feminine it’s almost cliche, with flowers and vines and butterflies and birds, so it needed to be a floaty and very girly dress. I’d also seen all the backless dresses around and been thinking about making one. This fabric seemed a perfect match for that, and the embroidered butterfly matched the print. Because the butterfly is the feature I kept the rest of the dress relatively simple, with a full skirt and basic bodice. With the dress being backless I obviously can’t wear a bra with it, so I stitched bra cups into the lining. The fabric is very thin so I lined the bodice and added two extra layers under the skirt, one of blush-coloured rayon, one of lemon poplin. The skirt is both darted and gathered to allow fullness, and elasticated in the back. I had thought of putting in sleeves, but they didn’t look right so I left it sleeveless.
