I made the gingham top years ago, using a Topshop top I already had as a template. I rarely wear it though so have been meaning for ages to use the remaining fabric to make a bottom half, and create a new dress. I made a simple elasticated waist gathered skirt, with the intention of attaching the two pieces together, but have now decided to leave them as a top and skirt, because a) it allows flexibility (well, you don’t always want to look like you’re dressed for a hoedown do you?!) and b) I didn’t have the presence of mind today to figure out how to join the two neatly (and I always wear a belt so the join wouldn’t have been noticeable anyhoos).
The fabric has a cute blue contrast selvedge which I left visible as i thought it looked quite good (and saved another hem, heh heh!)
Productive day today yay! But maybe next I’ll make somehting that’s not gingham..

thank you all!
I used about 1.8m – it’s quite thin cotton so doesn’t bunch up too much at the waist. It’s just elastic through the hem at the waist. I made the same type of skirt over the winter in a heavier wool plaid but used a bit less for that, about 1.5m, as it was a bit chunkier. super easy :)

Love the skirt! I like that it has lots of folds of fabric… How much fabric did you use for the skirt? I would love to recreate this myself!

very cute and great idea to keep the 2 separate and just conceal the waist area with a belt.

Really cute! I’m normally not a big fan of “two-piece-dresses”, but this works great! And the shoes are so sweet.

Very cute – I think gingham is under rated! I really like the blue selvedge edge also.
