Description

I made this dress for Miss Crayola Creepy’s Great Gatsby Challenge. I was inspired by the 20’s but didn’t make an authentic dress, instead I took elements I like from ’20’s dresses and made a dress I would like to wear – it has a dropped waist, a low back, pleats and beading! I altered the ’20’s look though and made it more fitted and a little shorter so it’s more wearable for me. I love it!

I designed this myself using my block and I am thrilled with the way it turned out, It all lined up perfectly and I’m pretty pleased with the fit.

Thank you :) A block is a very basic pattern made to your measurements, it has darts etc but no seam allowances. You can alter it/move the darts/modify it to almost anything I think – Although I haven’t tried a jacket yet! I made mine by combining a bodice and skirt block, you can also make trouser blocks. There’s a tutorial on making your own here: http://www.burdastyle.com/techniques/constructing-the-basic-bodice-block

I’ve really enjoying making mine and playing around with it :)

Hi Mary, If you’re interested in making blocks that fit you perfectly and adapting them to create patterns, then one of the best books you can buy is Metric Pattern Cutting by Winifred Aldrich. Used in every college and it’s how I learned too. She shows you adaptations from your block to make every neck, sleeve, bodice, skirt, trouser style you can think of! Just look up her name on Amazon :) x

Very wise decision to make the dress fitted, it emphasizes your tiny waist!
