When I first flipped the new BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern book, I was immediately drawn to the 80s variations. I used the Elizabeth Gathered-Waist Dress base pattern, and followed the instructions for the Veronica 80s top variation. I fell in love with the different V panels, and how they could easily be color blocked. The 80s is my favourite retro era, I am in love with the bright colors and crazy silhouettes. They are right up my alley…plus I love shoulder pads.
I got this galaxy spandex fabric at Spandex House here in NYC. I first made leggings with it, and then I used the leftovers for this lovely top! I paired it with blue mesh spandex and black sequins. When I was drafting this variation I made the hemline about 3" longer than the book said, and I also added additional inserts at the side because I wanted to incorporate more blue mesh.
I LOVE this top/dress/tunic…I even wore it to the book launch party in Brooklyn. I got many compliments on it, and I know I’m going to wear it multiple times this holiday season for parties and outings because it is super comfortable and unique.
