Last December was a very busy month for me with the release of my new book, BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern, just around the corner and many events to attend. I wanted to make an outfit for each of my book signings and book launch parties. I worked very hard on the book in the last year and a half and was ready to celebrate!
This turquoise metallic brocade dress with floral specks of peach, rose, gold, violet, and lush greens is my absolute favorite of the four garments I made. It is a variation of the Elizabeth Gathered-Waist Dress I designed for the book. The silhouette is so fun and playful – a staple from my very own wardrobe – and was perfect for my confetti-themed New York book launch party at 3rd Ward, where I also teach sewing classes. (Check out the last two party photos shot by the talented Liz Clayman from our fun night in Brooklyn last month.) I also photographed my project at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Chinese Garden Court.
In my variation, I made large pleats on the skirt as opposed to gathering the waistline. (That would be a total killer on this beautiful brocade, causing it to fray.) I also used a center back zipper, shortened the hemline, and made slight fit adjustments to the bodice. For a cleaner finish, I did a blind hem stitch on the hem. Stay tuned to see the other three party dresses I made!
