Flaunting Fifties

Gardabaer, Iceland

Summer is the season for showing off skin. This vintage 50s variation is truly key. Perfect for picnic in the park or dancing the night a way in a badly air-conditioned clubs. Beware of the latter though, for you will be groped by both wanted and unwanted fellow pub-patrons.

I pretty much followed the BurdaStyle 05/2011 patterns 126 & 127 to the t. However there were some slight changes made due to flatchestedness. I added an extra padding by upcycling an old bra, and added silk lining to cover up the foam. Now I feel very secure and very confident that I can actually pull of wearing just a barely-there bustier in public.

Material Notes

Checked fabric for both skirt and bustier, black lace ribbon (approx 3.5m)

FYI: I found the zipper frivolous since the skirt has a stretch waistband and lots of gathering. I could very easily slip into it without unzipping, so I took it out and sew the skirt shut. It looks much nicer that way too.

Yeah I know, it’s much more difficult than it looks – the Burda difficulty rating is way off if you ask me!
I had to do it quite a few times before finally figuring it out (read: passing it off to my mom and have her do the dirty work) which was to hand stitch most of the lining in place.

I love your skirt…and would be unable to do such a nice work with the bra!

Thanks! The fabric isn’t elastic, however the waistband stretches halfway to the moon! Thus with the gigantic amount of gatherings at the waist I didn’t need a zipper as the pattern suggests (although I took care of studying how to do it properly, only to take it out a day later).

It didn’t come easy, the Burda grading system does not give it justice. The outside facing was relatively easy. Just a simple matter of strategic placing on the fabric prior to cutting.
But the inside lining. I could not figure that out. Must have had at least 3 goes at it, before coming to terms I needed to come crawling back mommie dearest and have her save me from tearing it apart due to frustration. Luckily the fabric was very seam-ripper friendly.
