I bought this yellow fabric 7 years ago in Spain. I wanted to make (not myself!) of it a typical Spanish trail dress “bata de cola”, and because this kind of dress requires very much fabric, I bought 10m of it! Now I discovered the fabric again in my closet and decided to make (now myself!) of it a dress which includes flamenco elements. A peplum dress seemed to be the perfect choice for this purpose – and I love peplum anyway!
I chose a Vogue Pattern V8849 and started with size 8, but the bodice was to small so I ended up with 10 for the bodice and 8 for the skirt. Now I make always a muslin, because the Vogue sizes seem to vary with the pattern.
For the first time I dared to change some details in the pattern: I wanted the peplum to be a typical flamenco valance, and I made 2 of them, both double-layered white+yellow. The white fabric is a nice cotton damast with woven polka dots, this detail matches the polka dots on the yellow fabric!
In the first version I put the white valance at the top, but my husband said: “you look like a cook”. Even though he needles me sometimes with his brutally honest verdicts, this time I had to admit: this looked like an apron! So I put the yellow valance on the top, but it was too ruffled and my husband said again: “you look like you go swimming”. And again he was right, it looked like a floating tire! I must say, in the meantime my dear husband has advanced to a competent critic, no blemish escapes to his eyes and he makes me definitely no false compliments :-)
During the work I had the idea to use piping and, unbelievable: I found in internet a nice yellow piping with white polka dots! Well, obviously I made myself a difficult life with this idea!
I wanted also absolutely to include a detail that I totally love: a long visible zipper! This turned out to be very practical, because I can now step into the dress!
