Fishing Vest and Bucket Hats

Added Feb 17, 2010

Castle Rock, Uni...

The vest is a gift for a fishing friend. I found a pattern online but ended up using a blue jean vest as my guide for size. I rounded the front edges to look more like a fisherman’s vest. The pockets were all created from the pattern I found. I added two big inside pockets (for beer) and lined the front ones with checkerboard print.

For the bucket hats, I used the same gray cotton twill but lined them with a fish patterned fabric. I used black grosgrain in one and tan in the other to tell them apart. The hats are for his 2 boys. I got the hat pattern from my Hawaiian shirt project – it happened to be included.

Material Notes

Cotton, cotton twill, grosgrain

Garment Type
Cotton, Denim

Here’s a link to Adrienne Franklin’s pattern and instructions: I didn’t have the time or patience to go blow it up at the copy shop so I ad-libbed the vest itself but definitely used the pocket flap patterns.

Looks very professional, I adore how you’ve made matching hats for the children, your friend must be very happy with this gift. I’ll have to attempt to make one for my hubby.

Thanks! Almatinka, love to see your fishing rod rack! My boyfriend’s a carpenter and he made one as well:
