So I have this A-line skirt I really love.
This was my very first sewing project. I figured I would post it.
(I was a tad scared to!)
I used the a-line skirt I have as a pattern and sewed up this
baby. I don’t know what it is called but I doubled up
the back and the front around the waist to create a
band of sorts. I left the zipper purposefully exposed.
My husband isn’t to keen on the exposed zipper look.
I love it. Seeing other projects on here with the exposed zipper look
makes me believe that this is ok….Isn’t it???

The skirt is beautiful!!!!! Topstitching around the zipper would help, in my humble opinion, but the main thing was, is and always be that YOU love it!!! After all, it’s not for a client – it’s for you!

first off love your skirt and for putting yourself out there. Maybe just a running stitch in black embroidery thread around the zip (a mock hand picked zip) and maybe continue it around the yoke to highlight that as well. It is so pretty you might as well show it off. I personally love the exposed zip. I find working with what I’ve got on hand pushes me creatively and usually yields something fresh.

Having the doubled up part at the top is called a yoke :) And I love how you shaped the yoke, it looks great! As for the zipper, I like exposed zippers sometimes, depends on how it’s done. As the others said, having some black topstitching would make it look more like it belongs.

Thank you women of the globe. I agree. The problem is where I live there are no shops to buy invisible zippers. I get so impatient when I start something that I want it finished pronto - so I use what I have. My closest shop is an hour away in Savannah…… I think that I might do the stitching black as per Pippilotta’s suggestion….(Thanks Pippi!)
I just might make another with an inivisible zipper!

I like it with the exposed zipper, and also the colour of the zipper. Maybe the topstitches could be done in the same colour with a thicker thread? But I really like it as it is. So the zipper seems to be a matter of taste, I guess.

Yeah I like it too… I’m always afraid of curves… and of criticisms too, :) Maybe someday (soon, hopefully) I’ll be brave enough to post my works on here.
My only criticism here is, since there is no other black on the skirt, it would have been better to use the same color of zipper as the fabric if you’re going to make it exposed so it doesn’t stick out too much. That being said, if I do gather up the balls (or ovaries) to put up my projects, I hope to get honest reviews and not just, ’it’s nice’ and ’that’s great’ and other such stuff that just make your head swell without actually improving your skills.

I agree. I went to architecture school and let me tell you that the critic’s don’t hold back when discussing your work. I never get offended. If a project can be enhanced/deepened etc…. why not learn from others.
:-) Post some of your work, Lady!

Hey there! The skirt is great! However, I personally think that an invisible zipper would do better credit to the garment I am maybe wrong though… Anyway, hope you are well?

I think I agree with you. Do you think that I can wear this as is or is it too nasty? I am really missing a big city…. just for anything even for a good zipper (never mind some nice fabric…sheesh)
I am well, busy _ but well…How are you doing??? Did you go to NYC? I was hoping for a visit (maybe next time when our new place is finished we will have a guest room!!!!!)
