This was my first project with my sewing machine. I began with the instructions in Diana Rupp’s ‘Sew Everything Workshop’ with a couple of alterations as I went along… a tote bag really isn’t a complex project, so these alterations were minor – a change in measurements to make the bag better suit my requirements etc.
As I intended to use this tote as a book bag, it was important to use fairly strong fabric; I went with a toile canvas, lined with a very light cotton. The handle was made from the same canvas, for strength.
Denim, corduroy, upholstery fabrics and wool/blends would also work well.
