first coat attempt

Added Jan 16, 2012

Great Yarmouth, ...

this is a coat pattern from the december issue. Followed the instructions, only lengthened the arms a bit. Now that it is finished I am not so happy with my choice of material any more. It isn’t very warm plus I feel a heavier coat material would have suited the pattern better. Only bought this black/white wool mix because it was considerably cheaper than the real coat stuff and I didn’t want to spend too much, in case I messed up. Still, I can always wear it in spring.

Material Notes

fishbone/woolmix, lining, buttons

Winter, Spring
Garment Type
Business, Casual, Classic

I agree with schnui. Sometimes its quite good to try a pattern with cheaper fabric to build your confidence. And anyway, you surely need a coat for spring time. Now you are well prepared! :)

Yes, I am glad I did this little trial run ! Less scared now. As a matter of fact, have already started another jacket and this time a proper winter jacket :-))

      Herzlichen Dank Ralf.
I really appreciate your nice comment, it’s very encouraging.
My next project is a litte (fake) fur jacket, that should keep me warm enough til spring gets here :-))

There ain’t nothing wrong with a between-the-seasons coat :) I love a brightly coloured lining tucked away inside a coat!

Wow, I just made my own houndstooth jacket with red lining! Great minds think alike. I think yours is pretty cute.

Sometimes it is well worth trying a new project in a cheaper fabric, especially when you have to outlay a lot more money on the next piece of fabric to get what you want. At least you have learnt from this coat and the next one will be easier.

Yes, I agree. So glad I didn’t buy the more expensive material, but I feel much more confident now, so I might just get that expensive stuff yet :-)
