These are the first ever baby clothes that I made. They are for Akki, the little boy of my friends Niki and Immi and I am his godfather (mega proud).
My task was to design the card for when he was born, but obviously I wasn’t going to show up at the hospital empty handed, so I made him some clothes. I used a Butterick pattern as I had no experience in this, but I guess that will change now :)

Congratulations to both of you – you for having such a good looking model for your creations and Akki for having a handy personal tailor at this age :) The pieces look great, all of them. I think it´s about time for boys to wear red and girls to wear baby blue too!

First off, congratulations to you and your friends, I think Akki is a very lucky little boy to have you as his godfather :) Can I suggest you don’t use velcro though? I made that mistake with my daughter, fabric is forever getting caught in it’s tiny little teeth because babies kick when having clothing and nappies changed, plus it is very rough on baby skin if it accidentally scrapes over it. Stick with the press studs/ snaps, they’ve been working for years! Beautiful clothes for a beautiful baby.

Hey thanks for that great advice :) I was told by somebody taking a sewing class, but I think her advice was more grounded in sewing practicalities rather than what’s best for the baby. It’s really good to have this real-life advice :)

Oh, all these items are perfect!!! He looks great. I am pregnant myself and am wondering about what kind of fabric I should use for new-born-babies. Should it be 100% cotton? I haven’t sewn anything for my baby girl yet and I think I’ll wait until she is born but I’d like to know which fabric is best to use for their sensitive skin. Congratulations again! My nephew is called Aki too, it means autumn in Japanese!

Thank you, and congratulations on the pregnancy :)
I limited myself to natural fibers so you can’t go wrong with 100% cotton.
I tried to find a soft and heavy cotton but that turned out to be not so easy. However, with some searching I’m sure you’ll find something.
Next time, I might use velcro rather than snap buttons, I think that would be more practical.
Thanks for your comments :)
