This is a dress i made for my friend to wear to a 50’s themed party. She wanted to go with something not overly formal, more of the housewife look. So we sat down with some pictures and designed up a dress together. As we don’t live in the same place, i made a basic bodice toile, and fitted that before she went back.
Drafted the pattern myself, and covered the little buttons. I thought i was doing some sweet pattern making by elliminating the side seam and making it a continuous panel. This was a good idea, until i went to put in the invisible zipper!!! oops. i intended to put that in the side. I had to put in a side seam to do it because i didnt want to put it down the back. I did french seams on all of the bodice, because the cotton was really quite thin. I also thought it would just look nicer on the inside instead of overlocking. I did however overlock the skirt with my new, super expensive, but TOTALLY worth it elna coverlock. It does 17 different stitches! So exciting!!! You cant quite see in the pictures, but on each quarter of the circle skirt is 3 × 3cm pleats which give it some extra fullness :)
It turned out fitting quite well around the upper bodice, but somehow is a bit big around the waist :/ Im really not sure how that happened so im a little bit annoyed!!
Otherwise it turned out really well and looks great on her! She was doubtful of the colour choice of the fabric (we spent a considerable amount of time in the fabric store :p) but i do think it is quite flattering.
I also really like the little sleeves. I wish we were the same size! or perhaps i will just have to draft one for myself one day (gosh such a large list of things i want to make…..when will i ever get them all done!!)
Anywho, she has not been to her party yet, but she was up for the weekend, so i snapped some photos when she was here. She’ll be getting her hair done before hand, so i’ll upload a picture once its all happened!
