Recently I have been inspired by the steampunk aesthetic, and I have started making myself an outfit and accessories to wear to steampunk events.
I wanted a leather look, but I lacked the tools and the courage to work with real leather. The best alternative I could find was to buy an artificial leather BBQ apron from my local $2 store. This stuff is very easy to work with, doesn’t stress my sewing machine out, can be ironed, and I think looks passably leatheresque. :)
I used cable ties for bones, extra leatherette for binding, bronze eyelets and a length of leather thong for the lacing.
As it’s really only intended as a costume piece I didn’t make a lining, but it would be fairly easy to add one.
All up this little experiment cost me about $4 and an hour of my time.
