A nice friend brought me in april this silk from a China holiday – my first and only silk (at that time). I liked that pastel coulours, because I tend to grab bold colours and so I don´t have any pastels in my wardrobe – although I actually like them.
The pattern was quickly found: V1348 by Tom & Linda Platt.
But as I looked more exactly at the pattern, I discovered that it required 2,50m of fabric, and I had only 1,50m. Not enough, when I spreaded the fabric, I saw that in was only 1,10m wide, instead of the 1,50m wide common in Europe. Oh, that was fabric lack² :-)
But I was really happy about this, because this way I was forced to be creative and to mix more fabrics, what I normally don´t dare to do.
Planless I just started without really knowing how will I deal with this problem.
The pattern consists of exactly 2 pieces, that matched the width of the fabric in millimeter precision, but in the length they were much too short.
As easy the pattern for the fashion fabric is, as rich is the inner life of this dress: it has underlining, lining, facing, pockets and petticoat.
It is all made of silk, even the sewing thread.
Only the lace tape of the petticoat is of polyester (shame!) because I couldn´t find such a thing made of silk.
In order to prolongate the dress I decided to use white stripes and between them I put narrow organza stripes. With the petticoat underneath there are 2 organza layers that are just so sheer that they don´t reveal too much :-)
As a parallel to that stripes I also framed the neckline with a self made bias tape – my very first one, which unfortunately I didn´t managed very well.
Altogether I am rather satisfied with the result – it´s not perfect, but for my first experience with silk it is quite wearable. It appears to me that the biggest secret in sewing with silk is to always sew a stripe of tissue paper underneath the silk – thiy way everything stays smooth.
During the work on this dress I became more and more fascinated by SILK, and now I am completely obsessed by this wonderful fabric! My fabric collection enriched with some beautiful silks – so… to be continued :-)
