It’s summer in Australia, and we’re having a bit of a heatwave. Being outside today with the extremely high temperatures and strong winds was like walking around in a fan-forced oven. They were forecasting today in Sydney would get to 43 Celcius (110 Fahrenheit), so a few days ago I was wondering what I had in my wardrobe for heat like that. Then I remembered I’d picked up these bits of fabric at an op shop a while back. It was just two long pieces of crepe that someone had stitched together lengthways. And it only cost $1. I thought it would be perfect for a lightweight maxi dress, so I made it last night.

So I unstitched the seam, then stitched them together at the edges on the narrower side, and then for about half of the long side, leaving an armhole and open from mid/lower thigh to allow movement and air flow. The two pieces were even of different widths so I could do the cowl front. The I just hemmed the bottom and neckline, put in darts on the back shoulders to stop it sliding off, and that’s it.

And it was perfect for the weather. I made this in lightweight polyester crepe because that’s what I had lying around, but it’d work really well in a soft cotton too.
