i made this dress using two cowl neck patterns. the front was burda 8/2011 and the back was my mccalls 9464. my gold dress pattern. i added to the nightmare of doing this by adding sleeves from another pattern lol!! oh well i thought in for a penny in for a pound lol. i had this in mind once i got the fabric and seeing another green done in a similar way just encouraged me to press on. now my machines hate the sequins. i have an alfa standard which i love . its vintage and cam sew through up to 8 layers of fabric leather etc but the sequins floored it. i broke 16 needles all sizes before i gave up. i’ve sewed this 3/4 by hand and that took hours.i did’nt get to wear it as the event we where going to was cancelled so i choose the wrap to wear out instead. i’m hoping to find a way to machine this before i wear it out on the 18th as i don’t want a whoops moment lol.
hand sewn sequin slight stretch fabric and polysatin for the lining

I got a few tips and thanks for that. Apparently pulling.sequins.out.of the seams is one way and carefully using a fine needles another x

oh, i’ve been trying to find that colour sequin fabric but in my corner of the world it’s next impossible. would it be too much to ask how much did a meter of it cost? cheers!

Hi. I bought it on ebay at !£10 a metre. I thought.that was.really good as I know how much a dress made with.good sequins costs. I bought it in navy as well which.is lovely as well x

Gorgeous dress!!! If I can give you a tip for sewing sequin fabric: you have to take off all the sequins from the seams allowances, then hand stitch some sequins on any bare spots when finished. I guess it will take hours but you will be happy with the results.

Thanks for the advice. I think taking the sequins of in the seams would.nt be as time consuming as hand sewing. I always have a fear of a dress coming apart on a night out which is why I stitched all the seams on this three times lol.x
Jan 6, 2013, 10.09 PMby Kim Mullins
wow thats a yummy dress, I was once told to take the sequins off (i suppose snip them off) down the line of the seam where you want sew, you could then hand sew more matching up the seams if there are gaps and also to sew in the same direction that the are sitting not against them and use a sharp sharp (jeans?) needle.

Thanks.
I.m going to get some.jean and leather.needles.and.hope one.of them works. I.d reallyove.to do all these seams by.machine. I stitched everywhere three times so I.can truely say its done by.hand.lol.x

Shame you didn’t get to wear it! I think with sequinned fabric you’re meant to unpick the sequins from the seam allowances before sewing, that’s what I’ve heard. The few times I’ve used sequinned stuff, that’s what I’ve done and if I do have to sew over any sequins (like with darts) I’ve used the machine but turned the knob by hand rather than used the foot pedal so you can put the needle slowly into the sequins. It looks lovely though,so hope you do get to wear it
