Description

I’m almost tooo embarrased to post, but if anything this project shows the importance of a dry-run before the final masterpiece! I did learn a lot (all-in-one facing) and practiced my invisible zips and rolled hemming – so not an epic fail. My husband even said it was “really nice” and encouraged me to complete it… however I am a little guilty of letting my sewing skills go down the drain with my enthusiasm when I realised IT DIDN’T FIT!!!! This is my first burdastyle project as I usually work from commercial patterns. Props to elainemay for such a gorgeous pattern. I hope to do it justice next time.

Material Notes

poplin, invisible zip... and a lot of frustration

thank you for your comment on my burda dress! yours looks great. too bad it didn’t fit.. i actually tried 3 times to make it fit, and when i made it with stretchy cotton jersey i didn’t have to put a zipper. anyways, i love the color!

I find that I can always reuse the fabric from those “I have no idea what went wrong” projects… and even those “I can’t believe I did that!” ones as well- like accidentally cutting everything against the grain… but anyway- put it aside, one day you will need some of that gorgeous blue poplin for another project and there it will be- just waiting to be cut up and used in a wardrobe refashion. Nothing is ever wasted in this house :-)

A friend of mine was clearing out her wardrobe and taking a bunch of clothes to sell at her local market – so I gave her a few items, one of which was this dress. Although it only fetched $10 there were two girls who were fighting over it as they absolutely adored it. and I made a few $$ on what it actually cost to make.

Maybe you could give it as a gift or sell it to someone (if you can’t alter it to fit you)? It looks far too nice to hide away at the back of your closet! Looks like you did a great job and I love the color…don’t lose heart…we all have these ‘bloopers’, lol!

Darl, take heart, I think everyone who sews has one of these little “whoopsie-doodles” hiding in the back of their wardrobe never to see the light of day! (Mine was a dreadful Vogue Dress – that is never mentioned – I don’t want to talk about it. . !) Your technique looks really good, the fabric is lovely, the rolled-hem sounds impressive and your husband sounds supportive! Don’t give up!! Some times certain patterns aren’t made for certain people!

I’ve never had to add seam allowance before – but after searching, I found the easiest way to do so was with a compass. Then, I was advised not to add it to the darts…. should have gone up one size I guess, but I’ve got this fear of sizes, so its my own fault. It is a gorgeous dress and I’m going to have another try at it – think I’ll do individual ruffles, rather than a snake as I have some busy cherry material that I will be using. Hope to get it done in the next 2wks – and then its my Cynthia Rowley…. always another project waiting in the wings!

IT looks gorgeous! And hey every piece you learn something new. Don’t be discouraged if it fails to fit! I have made a couple of pieces that friends loved!

Congrat’s and your dress is beautiful! I love the jewel tone.

Your dress is pretty and pretty color too. I have not done the coffee date bc of school and other projects but I AM going to do it. I think my main problem will be the rufflies. And since it’s cold here now I may have to put on some sleeves!

This dress looks great! I love the color! I had the same problem with my first one; if it’s any consolation, it’s much easier the second time!
