Burda Style For people who sew

This fabric was a $2 find at a community garage sale I wandered through a few weeks back while filling in time waiting the hour until a train would finally turn up at the middle of nowhere town I was at for my PhD project. Add to that vintage buttons that were in a large box of vintage buttons I inherited from my grandmother, and this was a very cheap top. The pattern is ‘epaulette cut and sewn’ from the fantastic “She has a Mannish Style” – seriously, I think I’ll have made almost everything from this book at least once before the year is finished. It was incredibly easy to make, and would be very easy to adjust to make it more fitted, change the sleeves or neckline, turn into a dress, the possibilities are endless.

The fabric is a thick but slightly loose weave cotton jersey in navy and white. The buttons were probably originally from a light jacket by the look of them (solid, gold-coloured metal). I wasn’t sure what buttons to use for the epaulettes, and in looking through what I had thought about red or grey plastic ones before spotting these in my box. The navy matched the stripes perfectly, there were two of them, they were in great condition, so that was that.
