My best friend Ivanka´s getting married next month and such an occasion calls for a new dress! Since my skin is very light (or more likely white – in czech we call someone who doesn´t get tanned “director of a limestone quarry”. So that´s me.) even in the summer I thought I need some full color to have a nice contrast to the skin. And than I saw this purple cotton-satin in the local fabric store. It was 1,2 m rest for half of the price. Enough for a dress with a pencil skirt. Few days after I found out they have another 2,5 m also for half of the price and I bought it too. So I went for a big skirt and a matching small handbag and still have the 1,2 m left for another dress maybe..
The pattern for the top of the dress is from Burda 3/2011 (Mod. 108). I changed it a little, so the back isn´t so low. It looks very 50ies/60ies like – full front and open back. The bodice is also a little bit longer than the original and it´s lined with the same fabric. A big skirt. And a handbag (the gloves are my grandma´s, maybe 50 or 60 years old). The dress looks just fantastic!

Thank you ladies, about the size.. I made size 36 as I always do (with this kind of skirt I don´t care about the hip measurements – only about the chest). I have 84 cm around my chest, 65 cm around the waist – so that´s a 36. The petite sizes are always 36/2 = 18 etc. So if you are a 34 you need to use size 17, if you are a 36 use 18 and so on. The same with sizes for tall girls – 34×2 = size 68 (if you are eur 34), 36 is 72 etc. I just found this great help: http://www.burdastyle.de/chameleon/outbox/public/6506295f-c2c9-ec4a-f434-c3af2f2c134d/Masstabelle_Damen_Herren.pdf
all us and european sizes for both senoras and caballeros :)
Also I always check the measures on the paper pattern before cutting the fabric – just check the waist, bust and hips on the front piece + the same on the back, everything x2 and your measurements should be less than that. With this dress I had a wrong size problem too – only that I unwillingly lost some weight between sewing and wearing it to the wedding so the dress was a little bigger for me.

I am a little confused by the size… I am a size 2 – should I use the “17”… is this for petite?

I don’t know what to do either. I just made the second smallest size but it is too small for me :(
What size did you use zranitelna? Any advice? Yours looks lovely.

Heh, I used the same Burda pattern and the same fabric (purple cotton sateen) to make a dress to wear to a friend’s wedding. Mine is not as pretty as yours but since it was my first time making a dress, I’m happy with it :-)

:) I guess I coppied your idea then. Ok, I have to correct: This dress is based on omgdora´s purple dress for a friend´s wedding. ;)))
Thank you for the compliment and for the idea too, of course!

Thank you. In that case I´ll hide in the back :) The bride envies me because of my sewing skills :))

I’m a fellow ‘limestone quarry’ so I understand the need to wear bright colours. I absolutely love your dress, the purple is so droolsome.

The dress does look fantastic – congratulations! And the colour is “wow”. Wish you a lot of fun wearing it and a lot of compliments from everybody!
