I got myself invited to the garden party at Buckingham Palace this year. This was my first attempt at a button up dress to wear to it, I used pattern 125 from Burda magazine 5/2009.
For the next attempt I’m going to add more buttons and use a darker, less flimsy fabric. My sisters all liked it but my mum didn’t like the colour of the ribbon with the colour of the fabric.
Any advice on improvements would be greatly appreciated! And who thinks I should wear a fascinator..?
The pattern instructions say to use lightweight dress fabrics, so I used some £4 bargain sari fabric . It was very nice fabric and good to see the finished dress made up in it, but for the actual dress I'd better find something a little stronger - this dress has 7 panels and burst at a couple of seams when I bent over to try some shoes on! Or maybe I need to tone up a little... I also melted a bit of the collar when I was pressing it - ugh! I hate ironing!

Oh thank you all for such lovely comments – you guys are great! I made some miniature top hats a while ago that were quite cute, but I’ve always wanted to try something with veiling so I shall check out inspiring images from that period and have a go…

I love it. I love how the ruffle and the trim take it from everyday shirtdress to extra special!

I also agree with mezzky….a little 40’s hat with a veil would look amazing with this dress. The orange colour really suits your skin tone and I love the grey as a contrasting colour. You can pair it with grey shoes and it will be an amazing outfit. Enjoy the garden party!

Excellent choice of fabric, pattern, color and the gray ribbon is a nice contrast and really makes the dress distinctive. Well done!

I love the fabric and you definately don’t have to tone up! You look great, as does the dress! And regardless of what your mom sais, the ribbon detail is very pretty, too. Keep on sewin’! :)

I love it, and I think the colors are fabulous! I think a hat is a great idea (as mezzky suggested).

I actually really like the colour combinations. The ribbon detail adds interest to crucial areas. You could wear a fascinator – but I agree with mezzky, a little hat would be great. Are you planning a jacket to go with the dress?

I was thinking that not so much a fasinator but a 1940’s style little hat that tips forward with decortative veiling might be the thing with the dress. I love the style of the dress on you. good luck with the next version
