a quilt for a friend getting his doctorate in immunology. we were in the fabric store, he was getting excited at the japanese fabrics, and i said, “oh, i’ll make you a quilt.”
ahem.
so three years later, at the start of summer, the quilt. as usual the piecing was a breeze and it was the quilting that made me slack off. i had thought about sending my top out to be quilted but i slacked off there too. anyway. i learned that despite my previous convictions i actually can’t hand sew, and my binding skills are pretty nonexistent. that’s what i love about quilts, they make you come face-to-face with all your shortcomings and they never stop, because they’re just so freakin’ big, you can’t stick them in the drawer or under the bed (well, not easily) and then go back to believing you COULD finish the quilt if you only had the time, or more thread, or the space, or whatever your excuse of the week is.
the hedgehog covers up where i accidentally clipped into the binding, leaving an inch long stretch of frayed binding edge. thank you quilt for another ego-boosting moment there.
still, i think it came out OK.
cotton, cotton batting, poly thread and quilt thread, one linen hedgehog patch purchased in a panic, received, lost, found, and finally sewn in place.
