Description

My first try at shirring! This project took my so so long!!! But I’m happy that I learn’t a new technique, and I have already applied shirring to two other projects! I loved the material… but it turned out not quite as I hoped, I think a more lightweight material would have made the dress slightly less puffy :) I also struggled a bit with the instructions, particularly for the skirt part…but maybe this is because it was holiday and I did not quite had dedicated sewing time… picking up and leaving again is never good.. and thats also way it took so long to finish! Well, with this dress comes a new years resolution: setting proper time aside for learning new sewing techniques (maybe I will even find a workshop / sewing classes?)! I’d love to learn how to do proper pieces of shirring quickly :)

    I love shirring too and can’t wait to use it more! Did you trace the lines for stitches and use the elastic thread for the bobbin? Amazing landscape you have there!

      I’m also a shirring fan now :) I just think the shirring method I used was a bit time consuming… particularly as I shirred the entire bodice! I’ve followed a shirring technique found under “resources” here on burdastyle: I traced the lines followed by cutting individual elastic threads for each line at desired length, and sewn with zig-zag stitch… individual threads then had to be shirred. it took forever :) but I heard that threading the bobbin with the elastic thread can be complicated… but I think I will try this next time as it is probably quicker :) I want to use shirring a lot in the future :)

      I made this shirring with the elastic on the bobbin. It’s not complicated but you can’t quite predict how tight it will be in the end. The length of the stitch influences that, also the choice of stitch- straight or zig-zag. Not to mention the distance between rows. It’s best to experiment first. I plan to make more of those dresses!

    Such a lovely dress. I was just today thinking I should try shirring but was scared of it. After seeing your pretty dress I decided to give it a try anyway :)

      oh you have to give it a try!!! You can do such much with shirring :) I’m already planning another shirring project!
