I made this Dog coat from a pattern on Martha Stewart’s website. Fortunately it was the right size for my dog, a small Boston Terrier, so I was able to print the pattern and get started.
My dog is still getting used to wearing it. He is not crazy about clothes in general. I even had a hard time getting him to look at the camera wearing the coat!
We have had some wet and cold weather lately and the coat has come in handy. The water resistant quality of the coat was tested in a torrential downpour and it kept him dry. Maybe he will grow to like it.
There were a couple of challenges. It took me awhile to get the tension right sewing through the velcro. It is still a bit of a mess in one spot as you can see in the picture. It may take some practice before I can sew binding tape on nicely. Maybe I will try it without so many pins.
For the exterior of the coat I used a coated cotton from a recycled rain coat. For the interior I used a leopard print fabric with a soft pile that was from an old skirt. I did modify the pattern slightly by reversing the fabric for the collar for decorative effect. The leopard collard makes it kind of chic.

Hi, ive got to small doggies and would love to make them one each but i am a true novice and the Martha Stewart instructions baffle me a little. I cant see a pattern to print either but youve said that thats what youve done, i think i would find it much easier to do with a pattern could you please tell me where you mannaged to dowload/print it from…thanks claire uk

This is so very cute, what a great job you did. I was looking for a coat for rain/snow for my Boston Terrier (we just moved up north) and this is inspiring! I will definitely be making this pattern based on your result—and I love the leopard contrast! Great work. My Boston has been wearing sweaters for years—my sister custom made his first one out of stretch fleece and he’s grown used to them over the years.
