This is the Diana made with 70s era Japanese cotton fabric. The lining (not shown) is a tan cotton-linen blend.
I stiffened the front and back panels (1 and 2 in the pattern) by applying a medium fusible interfacing, then I added twill tape to the strap. The tape was added in the following way: after turning the strap right-side out, I securely attached the end of the (washed, dried, and pressed) twill tape to an old-style wooden yardstick. I then slipped the yardstick into the strap and pulled it through the strap carefully, making sure the twill tape didn’t twist or fold, then I detached the tape from the yardstick and removed it. I then pressed the strap again and topstitched down both sides.
I used 1 3/8 twill tape and topstitched 1/4 inch from the edge; I could also have sewn the strap with a scant 1/2 inch seam allowance instead of 3/8 inch and topstitched 1/8 inch from the edge.
I also made the strap four inches/10 cm longer than the pattern called for, because the strap as designed would have been too short for wearing over a heavy winter coat.
Outer fabric: 100% cotton vintage Japanese print, ca. 1970s, from the “anti-fashion” section of Mitchell Fabrics in Winnipeg (hence the “heavy winter coat” concern)
Inner fabric: Cotton-linen blend in tan
Twill tape: bought 1.5m, washed/dried on hot to shrink, became 1.3m. If you use twill tape, always wash and dry on hot before using!
