Making this dress was the most fun I ever had sewing :-) (Mainly because it came close to the “vision” I had in mind :-) The construction is quite simple, I used a Burda pattern (Amour fou blouse) to make the top and added some ruffles running from the front to the back. I connected the skirt (basic tulip shape) to the top with a wide elastic band and left it visible in the front.
As soon as it gets warm enough I’ll wear it on a night out :-D
Soft denim, elastic band, interfacing

hi i am trying to make a ruffle top at the moment but have a few questions, i really like your ruffles on this dress and i was wondering if you could help me out. first of all the diameter for my circle is 32….. does that sound ok to you? what was the diameter for yours? and also do i need to add a seam allowance to my pattern and how do i sew it on? and lastly, how do i draw the outside curve? i would really appreciate your help!! :)

Hi Kelsey, I’ll try my best to explain, but my patterning skills are limited :-)
Ok I started drawing a line on my pattern where the ruffle is supposed to go. (in my case from shoulder seam over the bust to the waist.) Then I cut along this line, creating two more seams in which you place the ruffles. So you have to add seam allowances to these new seam lines as well. Next I measured these new seams to determine the circumference of the inner ruffle circle. (for me it was 42 cm from shoulder seam to waist). Then you do some basic math 42cm:3.14=14.6cm. 14.6 is the diameter of the inner circle, divide this by two and you get the length you need for your compass and you can draw the inner circle.
The outside curve I drew free-hand, just decide how wide you want the ruffle to be.
In the end, you will have to cut 4 ruffles and sew them together at the widest part (where they will meet the shoulder seam). Also sew together all the other bodice parts at the shoulder, so you can encase the front and back ruffle in one long seam.
Don’t know if that’s clear at all…If you want, I can mail you pics of my pattern, maybe that would help :-)

Also, have a look at this link: http://wkdesigner.wordpress.com/tag/blouse/
There is a ruffle pattern there as well, it’s an armhole ruffle though, but there are some helpful drawings and lots of other good stuff :-)

Sorry for the delay, I uploaded a picture of the ruffle pattern. Basically, I determined the length of the ruffle and used this as the circumference to calculate the size of the circle (circumference/3.14=diameter). The smaller the, circle the “stronger” or more ruffly the ruffle gets. Hope that makes sense :-)
