Thanks so much for sharing this! I’m a beginner and have learned so much creating this. The videos made everything very clear. It is so simple to create but still looks great :)

Lovely pattern, super-easy printing and instructions, I can’t wait to get started – this is the first garment I’ve looked at and though yes I can do that!

Thank you Knit1bake2. I am planning to do a tutorial on linings based on this pattern very soon. That will make this pattern even more versatile. It will be a good general lesson in many techniques in dressmaking for beginners.

The download is working ok for me. Are you clicking on ‘Print Pattern at Home’. The PDF should open in your browser. Make sure you choose the correct paper size. I have drafted this pattern for both US Letter size and International A4.
Let me know if you still have problems.

I am a beginner sewer but the dress looks great! I will def. try this project and upload it- I look forward to 1 year free membership to your site- as it seem you are a very creative and talented designer!! Just a question, is there’s a deadline? I just saw this post and pattern- and as a beginner sewer, it takes me ted bit longer! Oh BTW, do you think this pattern could work with jersey knit fabric? or lightweight? Any suggestions?

Hello giffengood,
There is no deadline. I am only too pleased to help beginners to get good results to spur them on.
I wouldn’t recommend this for jersey. Jersey moulds itself around your body and it is a waste to put effort into darts and zips when jersey stretches.
It would be ok with lightweight. It would be better to line it in that case and I do want to add more instructions for adding a lining.
I will look out for your project but don’t rush it. Good Luck.

My only concern is that when i submited to the pattern I did not recive any free full membership, did I do anything wrong?
Kind regards, / Mona

Hello Mona,
The offer for Full Membership to my site and all members patterns and videos for one year is waiting for you when you have completed your project and published it on BurdaStyle – be sure to link it to this project though.
I’m looking forward to seeing your version. It is such a compliment seeing so many sewers making up my pattern.
I notice just under 5,000 of you have downloaded this pattern – wow!!

Hi!
First of all I just want to say that I just love this dress so much!
I just have a question, and I hope you dont find to odd to answer:
I have this lovely burberryprinted fabric that I want to use for the dress but I’m not sure if it is suitable for it. It is 100% cotton and quite heavy wheigt, I’d compare the feeling of it to a “normal” pair of jeans. What do you (or anyone else) think? Shuold I give it a go or is it a bad idea?

Hello Monah, If it’s normal jeans denim as you say it would be perfect. The original I made was pretty heavy denim and perfect for rugged wear.
I am looking forward to seeing it finished.

Started my project and have to say, I haven’t had so much fun in ages. I used to sow yrs ago and probably not that well. I even made my wedding dress. This site has really got me going again. My 16 yr old has first dibs. My 11 yr old is still thinking about her design and comes second. Looks like I will be doing a few projects. Thanks so much for all the hard work and the easy to follow tutorials.

Hi Kim, So pleased you have been inspired and flattered that you are working on my pattern.
Great to see young girls sewing again – I don’t think they get much encouragement at school these days. When I went back to my old school for a reunion not so long ago, the cookery and sewing department had been turned into engineering. And that’s an all girls school!
Can’t wait to see your results.
And thank’s for the Facebook add.

Thanks Angela,
Trying to find my way around and noticed lots of photo’s. Really enjoying myself. I have to make my older daughter’s dress (but then I don’t really want to share – Blush) She is my cook. However, Charleigh the 11yr can’t wait to get cracking – it may get a little crazy but I will allow her to fly with the design. May have to tie my hand behind my back.
You are correct about craft and cooking at school and it is such a shame.

Such a cool dress, with lots and lots of possibilites. Thanks also for the lining hints and tips, I have managed to avoid that so far with my summer gear, but I’d like to make this in wool, so I think lined it will have to be.
One question; I’m probably being very slow indeed this morning, but I can’t see the amount of fabric required listed anywhere?
I’m guessing in the region of 2m, but if anyone can point me to it, I’d like to know before I go and splash my cash on luscious wool!
Thanks!

You are right, I don’t do yardage suggestions. In my small way of encouraging sewers that the whole process is simple, I find it works better to print and cut out the pattern and then lay the pieces out.
There are so many different widths and apart from my free patterns, I draft for size 6 -22. Then again you may want your garment shorter or longer than the pattern or have a contrasting bodice.
Wool yardage can be quite wide and so you may only need, say 130cm in length as you can get bodice and skirt in the medium size side by side.
For myself I nearly always buy extra, then you have some to make an accessory, a belt perhaps or a flat cap that would be great with this dress.
So don’t take the risk, work out what you need and add some.
Nov 23, 2010, 07.17 PMby camberwellgal
Thank you Angela for your thoughts on yardage (as well as the pattern of course!). I shall take your hint at using good sense, and print and stick the pattern together to get a sense of how much I need before I go off fabric shopping. I’m quite sure there will be uses for the rems; I do particularly like the pattern photograph with the belt above….
Good sense, providing I can restrain myself from passing through Brixton on my way home tomorrow!

Hi chicaroja, I tried downloading both A4 and US letter versions and it works fine for me.
I shall investigate further when I get into my studio this morning. But can you wait that long!

I’ve been eyeing up this pinafore ever since you put it up, but thought once again the pattern would be way too small, but I just notice your link and I am estatic. I’m rushing off to down load the size large. Thank you for sharing this free pattern with us.

Hi Merrybe, I’m glad you like this pattern.
If you are going to use a woven wool I would definitely line this dress and then you will have a nice finish to the neckline and armholes.
Linings are on my long list of tutorials. It isn’t a difficult task though.
I would cut out a lining that is exactly the same as the dress. Make up dress and lining without joining the shoulder seam in either. Your zip is inserted in the dress.
Then join dress and lining, right sides together, stitching around neckline and armholes – stop just short of the seamline at the shoulder. Snip all curved edges as close as you dare to the stitching line
Turn through, press the edges carefully, rolling the lining slightly to the inside. Then join the dress shoulder seams. Turn in the lining shoulder seams and slipstitch together in place. You can still topstitch depending on the look you want. Otherwise under-stitch the lining to the seam allowance where you can to stop edges rolling.
That just leaves you the hem. Hem lining separately. I hope this helps – it’s easier to show in a video – well it’s not easier to do the video but it is easier to learn from a video!
With denim you can take liberties but for a good finish with nice fabric I would always do a lining or facings at the very least.
