Description

I made an Anna! This pattern by the awesome ‘By Hand London’ is easy to put together and fit me right out of the packet which is always brilliant! I used a nice stiff cotton duck by my new favourite fabric company, Buzoku! I think this gave it a structured look and helped give me an hourglass silhouette (woo hoo!)! I took lots more awkward photos (how do so many people on Burda manage to look so relaxed in their project photos?!) and wrote a lot more about this dress on my blog . Be warned though – there’s a lot of puns there!

Thanks, Yenny Lee! I’m not sure anything I’ve worn has ever been described as classy or sexy, but thank you for thinking this dress might be one or the other! :-)

This looks lovely, and I’m in love with the print! I wish I could find neat fabric like that around here. I’m too much of a feeler to order online haha!

Thank you, kristensaurus (I love your name! Dinosaurs rock!). I’ve never ordered online either – I think I have to be able to feel it first to decide what to make with it. I’m very lucky to have a MASSIVE stash (but sadly dwindling) from when I lived in Tokyo, but now I’ve found some new and exciting places here in Singapore! It looks like you still find some really lovely fabrics – you clearly have a great eye for them!

Aww, thank you, Mbaliyethu! I’ve never actually seen Mad Men (I know, I know, I live under a rock!), but it’s on my Neflix queue, mainly for the dresses and sharp suits! I’m sure you would make an even more beautiful version of this dress! :-)

Thanks, SassyT! It really is very bold and beautiful, isn’t it? I normally only buy bright colours, but this print was just too cheerful to resist!

Thank you, rachp! It’s beautiful, isn’t it? It was so unusual it really caught my eye among lots of very pretty fabrics! The pattern is great – I really don’t think it’s possible to make a bad version of this pattern!

it really does seem to be a failsafe pattern – I’m on my third version, with the fabric lined up for 2 more…

Ha ha! I do love animal prints! If I see any hippo print, I will be sure to let you know! Your daughter clearly has good taste like her mother!

You’re sweet! I’ve had to buy all my hippos online so far. My daughter is considered a little weird by her teachers (or maybe it is me they are actually considering weird!)…you may find the inhabitants of this place mostly casual and stodgy wrt fashion!

Oh no! I will be keeping an extra eagle eye out for hippos now! I think your daughter sounds awesome! Hippos are very happy looking creatures (but they can be a little scary in real life, I think?) – have you been to the new River Safari yet? I think there may be some there? I think I’ve been lucky as I’ve only noticed the beautiful bright colours so far, but I have got a few strange looks in my handmade clothes! That could be for many reasons though as I usually look quite confused and rumpled…!!

    • Img_6207_large

Aug 29, 2013, 10.24 AMby The Tropical Sewist

Hippos have huge teeth and are very fierce when frightened…so they are certainly scary! My daughter is in denial about this, though. We’re waiting for the boat ride in River Safari to open up before we go! But we did get to study a hippo for quite a while in the Night Safari, even though it was dark. Have you been there yet? It’s pretty nice in the cool of the evening.

I get the looks in my clothes too – trust me it’s the colours and print not the rumpledness! Everyone mostly wears solids or itsy-bitsy prints here! I’m sure we stick out a mile :) but who cares I have nice thick skin :) even better you might parade down Haji Lane or Shenton Way of a weekend and have one of them street photographers take your picture for their blog!

Ha ha! I certainly got lots of looks today when I wore my very bright tropical dress and I’m fairly certain it wasn’t rumpled, so you may be right…! We should meet up someday and march around in bright prints near Marina Bay!

I’ve been to the Night Safari and loved it! Unfortunately I want very well when we went so I saw all the animals in a paracetamol haze…! I must go back and visit the binturong again because they are awesome! I don’t remember the hippos, but I will certainly look out for them next time!

I liked the print of your previous project but this one is so wow! The dress is great, I think the fabric gave it a gorgeous shape and sure it’s very pretty on you! Tell me about photos he he he!! It takes me more time to take them than to sew the garment:P. I do the same as Mary: I take lots and after choose the (very few) good ones. I also have noticed that it is easier to get good pictures outside. I don’t know much about photography but from the seamstress’s point of view I like very much the second photo: you have a great pose that shows 100% the shape, the design and the beauty of your dress!

Oh! Thank you so much! The pattern is so good, I don’t think it’s possible for this dress to look bad, even on me! I had to stand on tiptoe to take the last photo – I think I need to use some books as a stand next time! Hmmmm! It looks like I will definitely be trying yours and Mary’s tips as you both have such great photos! I wish I could take photos outside, but sadly we only have a balcony and I think I’d terrify our neighbours! Maybe I will get some plants so they can’t see what I’m up to…!

Common, dont be shy!! You have to admit that you made a gorgeous dress, it’s not only the pattern, it’s the sewist’s excecution as well! You picked a really great fabric that highlights the shape and has a gorgeous print!!! And your photos are great, you have an adorable playful expression at your face. It’s a sewing site, we don’t have to model like fashion magazines, the point is to show our dresses and the joy we have wearing them;)

Oh! You are so sweet! I think that expression was more, “I just want this to be over so I’m going to try to make my face smile”! My real smile makes my eyes disappear so I always have to force them open (not too wide!) in photos otherwise I look a little odd…!

Oooooooooh! I love that print! It’s SO AWESOME. The dress is really pretty & suits you very well! Love the silhouette.

Thank you so much! It really is a beautiful print – totally love at first sight! I was a bit worried it might be too heavy, but so far it’s been okay!

Ha ha! I just don’t think I’m very photogenic – I always look like a T-Rex! I think your photos look great though – I need to learn your secrets!

Thank you, Mary! I was so happy when I found the fabric – I think I might buy the spaceman version next… I really like your method of taking photos! I think I forget how to smile once a camera’s on me, so maybe the twirl will make me laugh and then I won’t forget! I will definitely give it go – thank you! Good luck with all the dresses – four family events! – I bet they’ll all look fantastic! xx
