Brooklyn, New Yo...
This coat is based on Burda’s Talea Coat. I must admit that the seam ripper was my best friend on this project. I never made a coat before, and this one is listed as an Advanced level pattern. The biggest problem I had was following the instructions. Sometimes the diagrams and terminology didn’t seem to match the pattern itself. I think also, given that it’s an Advanced level pattern, that a lot of knowledge on how to sew a coat was assumed.
That said, I also drafted and inserted a lining for the first time (using the bagging method). And then had to do and re-do a lot of sewing because the lining and the hem did not seem to match up. All in all, however, I’m very happy with how it finally turned out. Next time, I would add interfacing to the front facing to give it more structure. And buy extra thread — There’s a lot of top-stitching on this baby!
I used a wool blend melton for the coat and a dark teal poly/satin for the lining. The photos don’t capture the color of the lining, but it’s a nice bright teal. The buttons are from Mood NYC.
