After quite a few months of taking my time with this coat it is finally complete. I’m still surprised that I’ve been able to make it as I haven’t made that many things really.
I decided to make the pattern as I wanted a showerproof jacket/coat but could never find the style I wanted in the shops.
The fabric is a Teflon coated microfibre fabric so it keeps me rain free for the Scotland weather! It is lined with a red anti-static acetate lining for the skirt part and a mesh breathable lining for the top bodice part. The kind of mesh you find in outdoor jackets. It’s so comfortable and light to wear. I hardly feel like I have it on!
The only problem I have with it is that it keeps shedding very fine red fibres from the fabric. I have no idea what is causing it. The first time I wore it I ended up getting red fluff all over my boyfriend’s jeans and jacket as I was walking along side him holding his hand.
I also had it all over my clothes underneath where the fabric was rubbing. So I’ve not worn it that often. When I have worn it, I need to make sure I’m not with anyone so I don’t fluff them up! And I have to make sure I’m wearing dark clothes underneath.
I’ve put it through the washing machine and that didn’t remove the fluff. I’ve also tried one of those sticky lint remover rollers and I tried it on a 20cm square area and was there for about 20mins rolling it and stuff just kept coming off.
So although I might not be able to wear this particular jacket very often, I would make the pattern again in a different fabric.
Oh, and it’s called ‘Prudence’ because ‘Dear Prudence, Won’t you come out to play…‘(The Beatles) happened to be playing as I was turning it right side out after I’d attached the lining!
The only adjustment I made to the pattern was making the belt longer so I could have a tie belt rather than a buckled belt.

Love that colour! You look absolutely fab! Too bad about the fabric shedding ‘fluff’, I have no idea what would be causing that… love the slightly longer length… it’s very flattering on you. Great job!

Simply gorgeous and the color will lift anyone’s spirits on a gray day! I have a purchased microfiber raincoat – fairly old now, but I still like it – in red – and it also fluffed all over everything for a bit. The fluff was so fine, I actually thought the color was rubbing off – bleeding – dye coming out – whatever – all over everything I wore. After a few more washes, it quit doing it!

Thanks Tessi! Yes the colour is actually much more vibrant than it shows on the photos I think. People can certainly see me coming! Interesting to read your experience of microfibre. That’s exactly what it looks like with me too, like it’s the dye coming off…the fibres are so very fine and by themself you can hardly see them but when they all gang up together they look like dye has shed. You’ve given me hope that it will sort itself out after a few more washes, so I’ll try that!
I actually wrote to the company I purchased the fabric from too and they said they’d never heard of anyone else having the problem which seemed strange to me. But hey-ho, I’ll try the washing machine :-)

Thanks Gillthecat.
And off to Scotland hey?! I see you live in Perth, Oz, too, I’m originally from Brisbane :-) Been here for about 9 years.
By the way summer hasn’t quite arrived in Edinburgh yet so bring some warm clothes! Do you have time to sew some jumpers before Monday?! ;-p
