This was from two years ago. I had a pretty cotton print fabric that my then 14 y.o daughter loved. She told me what she wanted, and I put together this dress for her using a bodice pattern and then making the skirt from an idea from Threads mag. that I had. I modified the skirt to be a short skirt. I did a rhinestone clasp closure for the back because I was uneasy about installing a zipper into a lined/boned bodice back then… to camouflage her bra. I sewed a scrap of fabric into a tube and threaded it onto her bra strap so from the back it just shows a bit of dress fabric. The other cool thing I did was to put an elastic "anchor " at the waist, to support the boned strapless bodice, it snapped tightly closed and held up the top as an extra security against any slippage. She danced ALL night!!

I free cut a larger over skirt from the fashion fabric, the under skirt (lining) was cut to the size and length that she wanted. I hooked them together at the top, with a lightweight tulle between the two. When sewn all up, I had her try it on and then tacked the extra here and there wherever it looked best. This is best done on a mannequin or person, so you can look at it as it hangs. Trust yourself and your “eye.” and you will be amazed!

Haha.. yes, all Mom’s have to be clever, I guess! I know my mom was! She made a genie costume for me once out of an old negligee, complete with headband and harem pants. :)
