Description

Last spring, I made my first Ukrainian dress in honor of my babcha (grandmother). Unfortunately she passed away before she got to see me in the dress.
Two of my aunts devoted the last 7 years of their life to taking care of my babcha and sick uncle.
This dark grey version of the dress was made for one of the aunts for all the work she did for my babcha.
You can read more about the dress and how significant handmade clothing is to passing down traditions on my blog here: http://bit.ly/1bVoVdK

It is just great!!! Crocss-stitching on the back looks very winsome and the dress is good for any occasion.

I just Love your embroidery – and it sad that your babcha could not see you in this wonderful dress.. I’m sure she would be very proud of you!

Thanks Ellen! I do wish she was still here and able to sew with me! I definitely inherited her sewing genes!

It’s so good to hear that you inherited her sewing genes – and that would make her even more proud of you!! Keep it up my friend! ;)

The dress is exquisite and what a lovely tradition. Your gran was deeply loved. My mums mum passed away before i was born and my fathers mum passed away when i was young so i have no ecperience of a grandmother. You are very lucky. Xx

Thanks Mary! Yes I was lucky to have my grandmother! Unfortunately by the time I was really interested in sewing, my grandmother grew ill and too weak to sew with me. However my older cousin was able to learn everything she could from my babcha!

What a beautiful dress and all that it represents. Your Grandmother must have been a very special lady to have her family love and take care of her. I am sure she would be very proud of you sewing this dress for your aunt. My Grandmother was very special to me and she has been gone for 17 years and I still think of her with love, every day. How lucky we are to have had such wonderful Grandmothers.

Thank you! Yes I think grandmothers are remarkable and I’ve been able to learn so much from their lives and wisdom! I’m always reminded of my grandmother as I sew and try and use some of the sewing details she sewed in her garments (long ago)!
