I have almost three complete sketchbooks of original designs for clients to choose from when creating custom garments. However, over the years I’ve noticed that there are two types of clients I encounter. The first is fashion Forward Fashionista: This chica is a trendsetter, and wants everyone to know it, not a problem for me. The challenge here is originality without going overboard. The second type of clientele is the fashion “Follower-ista” This lady walks an already beaten path of style with full confidence of knowing that her custom garment will turn heads. The challenge here is to make undoubtedly sure that my “knock off” delivers on it’s promise and looks great if not, even better than it’s original. Now both types always turn out to be some of my best work. A recent request for a custom dress has been from the 2009 music video by Jay-Z featuring Pharrell “Excuse Me Miss”.

Wow, that is shocking. I can’t say I like it, but I definitely appreciate the skill involved. It looks very well made and it fits the model perfectly!

Well thanks for your feedback either way it’s appreciated… “Holes in an evening dress” What a challenge! That is certainly one of the reasons why I accepted the design. I instantly thought of Cher and how she wore designer Bob Mackie’s custom gowns to perfection.

Do you fit all of your clients based on the muslin fitting above; by creating the darts directly to the dress? I would like to start making custom womenswear and I need some advice.

Hi Kelepso! To answer your question, I use a combination of muslin AND patterns to create custom designs for a client. It’s an extra step but saves lots of money and frustration.
For this look I used Vogue pattern V8658 cut it out in muslin and made the fitting adjustments and markings on the client. Then the muslin actually becomes my pattern pieces!
The best advice I can give when venturing into womens wear is to ALWAYS be concious of the fit we all come in different shapes not just size 2. Good Luck!

That advice helps alot! One last question. If the “muslin” becomes your pattern, how do you trace those pieces? Do you rip the muslin a part to trace each piece?

Ok, great question! After making the adjustments to the muslin during the fitting. I then decide how and where to place the zipper or opening of the dress. (For this look the zipper was a about 20"long from the neck down her back.)
I then take the muslin back to my workroom to start carefully seam ripping the muslin pattern pieces apart. Then I just lay those pieces to the actual fabric and begin cutting, keeping in mind my seam allowances the whole time I’m cutting.

Thank you! I’m working on a more “modest” version of the dress so stay in touch for that reveal!
